A Level Mathematics is a highly valued qualification because it demonstrates your ability to solve complex problems, think logically and work with abstract ideas. It is one of the main ‘facilitator’ subjects, required or desirable for a wide range of courses and careers. Mathematics may be successfully studied alongside arts, science or social science subjects. To be a successful mathematician at A level you will develop the skills and understanding to demonstrate mathematical argument, language and proof, solve mathematical problems, and use mathematical modelling. The Year 12 Course In the first year of the A Level course you: - revise and extend ‘pure mathematics’ topics covered in GCSE such as algebra, coordinate geometry, calculus, sequences and series and trigonometry - study probability and statistics which supports study in the sciences and social sciences - study elements of mechanics which supports study in physics. The Year 13 Course In the second year of the A Level course you continue to study the same areas of mathematics in more depth using more sophisticated methods. Additionally, you study numerical methods and extend the study of mechanics to include ‘moments’.
To study A levels at QPCS you have to achieve at least six GCSE grades 5-9. G7 in Mathematics
Year 12 There will be two 2 hour exams. Year 13 There will be three 2 hour written exams which will assess everything you have learned over the two years.
