Course summary

We want our students to have a greater understanding of the social world and how individuals are shaped by the social structures they live within. The course we have chosen reflects the interests and needs of the students in our community, providing students with the knowledge needed to understand social processes within society and the interrelationship between these processes and individuals. The modules chosen will allow students to explore the family, education, crime and belief. These topics help shape a student's understanding of society and structures. Students wishing to study at University will be well-prepared. Students will be able to develop skills which are valued by higher education and employers, including critical analysis, independent thinking and research skills. This course provides a coherent and holistic programme of study which features both historic and contemporary research to help students build a sociological imagination. We want all pupils to understand the world beyond school; we want them to know and understand professional competencies that are gained through studying Sociology.

Autumn Half Term 1 I will remember by undertaking daily DNAs and weekly short answer tests. As I start my A-Level journey it will be essential that I start to understand how to use Independent Study time effectively to ensure I am able to keep up with the content demands of the course. Portfolio 1: Horses For Courses - This test will assess your suitability for the course, it involves multiple choice questions and some short answer exam questions. Portfolio 2: Small questions Portfolio - Students will be tested on their knowledge and A01 skills through the use of 4 and 6 mark question Autumn Half Term 2 I will remember by undertaking daily DNAs and weekly short answer tests. I will also start to have the opportunity to complete essay questions and start to practise exam style academic writing. Portfolio 1: A collection of small questions focusing on the family Portfolio 2: An open book 30 Mark question focusing on education Spring Half Term 1 I will remember by undertaking daily DNAs and weekly short answer tests. By now I should fully understand the demands of an A-Level course and be able to independently embed learning. Portfolio 1: 30 Mark question Portfolio 2: Timed exam practice with a number of questions. Spring Half Term 2 I will remember by undertaking daily DNAs and short answer tests. Portfolio 1: Students will do a small unseen 10 mark question. Portfolio 2: Students will do unseen 10 and 20 mark questions Summer Half Term 1 Portfolio 1: Students will complete a smaller ‘family’ question in preparation for their ‘mini mock’ Portfolio 2: ‘Mini mock’ - Students will complete a full family paper. (One half of ‘Paper 2’) Summer Half Term 2 Portfolio 1: “Perfect” 30 Marker Portfolio 2: Mock exam - 2 Hours.(A full ‘Paper one’ with Education & Research Methods).
