Core Maths is about students doing meaningful mathematical problems to increase their confidence in using mathematics to be better equipped for the mathematical demands of other courses, higher education, real life and employment. Core Maths is the new Level 3 qualification for students who achieved at least a Grade 4 at GCSE mathematics and wish to develop their practical skills so they may apply these in work, study or everyday life. This is a one-year course with UCAS tariff points equivalent to an AS Level. Studying Core Maths will enable you to: • consolidate and build on your mathematical understanding, and develop further skills in the application of maths • build a broader base of mathematical understanding and skills in order to support the mathematical content in other Level 3 qualifications, for example Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business Studies, Economics, Computing, Geography, Psychology, Applied Science, Business, Health and Social Care and IT • be more prepared for the range of varied contexts that you are likely to encounter in vocational and academic study, future employment and life. The aims and objectives of Mathematics in Context are to enable you to: • develop competence in the selection and use of mathematical methods and techniques • develop confidence in representing and analysing authentic situations mathematically, and in applying mathematics to address related questions and issues • build skills in mathematical thinking, reasoning and communication.
-5 in Mathematics
Paper 1: Comprehension (40% - 60 marks) Paper 2: Applications (60% - 80 marks) Both papers cover applications of statistics, probability, linear programming, sequences and growth.
