The Drama and Theatre A level course is exciting, engaging and inspiring. This course is designed to enhance your appreciation of the Arts and promotes creativity, inclusivity and excellence. You will be encouraged to develop three threads of drama- creating, performing, and responding-allowing you to expand your skills as a performer, director and designer. Through a practical and theoretical exploration, you will develop the skills and techniques needed to explore societal topics as well as aspects of human behaviour including character, theme and issue, allowing you to connect to a variety of experiences and character personalities. Alongside this, you will refine your ability to analyse, evaluate and debate with well-justified reasoning, supporting you to be a well-informed and articulate member of society. Year 1 - A Level Autumn 1 and 2: Introduction to Drama Study and exploration of a variety of Drama practitioners and performance styles. Component 1: Devising (40%) Original performance piece. Students devise a performance using an existing play extract as a stimulus. Designer routes available. Students create a portfolio of the process and perform their devised performance to an audience. Year 2 – A Level Component 2: Text in Performance (20%) A group performance/design. A monologue or duologue performance/design realisation from one key extract from a different performance text. Performed to a visiting examiner. Component 3: Theatre Makers in Practice (40%) Section A: Study of a live theatre performance to analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of theatre makers in relation to a given statement. Section B: Practical exploration and study of a complete performance, Equus. Section C: Practical exploration and interpretation of complete performance text, The Tempest, for performance to a contemporary audience. Written exam- answer four extended response questions.
Must attain five 9 - 5 grades in full course GCSE subjects including Maths and English Language or Literature. No vocational subjects allowed to count in the five 9 – 5 grades. Indivdual subject critera also applies. English Lang/ Lit 5 and Maths 5. At least a Merit in an equivalent vocational qualification or at least a 5 at GCSE Drama
