Course summary

A level Mathematics not only supports further study for the physical and social sciences, but is a respected subject in its own right. It is challenging, interesting and highly rewarding and encourages students to understand mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment. The course illustrates how mathematical ideas are interconnected and how mathematics can be applied to model situations using algebra and other representations. It also teaches how to analyze data, understand the physical world and how to solve problems in a variety of contexts, including social sciences and business. Progression: There are many areas of employment that see A Level Mathematics as an important qualification and it is often a requirement for the vocational qualifications related to these areas. Mathematics prepares students for further study and employment in a wide range of disciplines involving the use of mathematics, such as economics, medicine, architecture, engineering, accountancy, psychology, physics and computer science. Some university courses will only accept students with further mathematics qualifications, so it is essential you check with the university you wish to attend if it is expected for the course you wish to study. Further Mathematics is also a good addition for those considering degrees in medicine or veterinary science.
