Are you a linguist in the making? Are you good with words? Do you get a thrill out of being able to communicate with others in a language other than English? Being willing to have a go at speaking is a brilliant place to start. The A-level French course builds on skills you have developed in your GCSE. A-level French helps students develop confident, effective communication skills in French and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where French is spoken. It develops an interest in and enthusiasm for, language learning and encourages students to consider their study of the language in a broader context.

Assessment
Year 1: There is regular assessment through Year 12 culminating in the end of Year 12 internal exams: Paper 1: Listening; Reading and responding, translation into English. Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes = 80 marks. This paper is worth 40% of the total end of Year 12 grade. Paper 2: Translation into French focusing on one book or a movie. Written exam: 1 hour 15 minutes = 60 marks. This paper is worth 30% of the total end of Year 12 grade. Non-exam assessment: Speaking - Knowledge of 2 sub-themes: 12-14 minutes (+ 15 minutes preparation time) = 60 marks. This assessment is worth 30% of the total end of Year 12 grade. Year 2: A-level Paper 1: Listening; Reading and responding. Translation into English and French. Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes = 160 marks. This paper is worth 40% of the total A-level grade. A-level Paper 2: 2 books or one book and one film. Written exam: 2 hours = 90 marks. This paper is worth 30% of the total A-level grade. Non- exam assessment: Speaking: Individual research project and knowledge of one of the 4 sub-themes. Speaking test: 21-23 minutes (+5 minutes preparation time) = 60 marks. This assessment is worth 30% of the total A-level grade.
