Biology is the study of all living things. It is one of the most exciting and rapidly developing subjects, and this is reflected in a constantly evolving curriculum. Biology topics are frequently featured in popular TV documentaries and news reports each week. It is a fascinating subject for anyone interested in understanding in greater depth the topics which they encounter in GCSE Biology. Topics include: cell biology, neuroscience, evolutionary biology as well as ecology. It opens doors to a wide range of careers both within and outside the field of Science and in addition it further develops skills in literacy, numeracy, problem solving and social awareness. In the first year you will study cells, biological molecules, DNA and cell division as well as immunology, digestion and mass transport in animals and plants. In the second year you will study genetics, ecology, the nervous system and gene technology, one of the fastest developing and promising research areas. A level is taught by specialist experienced Biology teachers with a wide range of relevant experience working in research and science industries. The course is linear and your A level grade is assessed at the end of Year 13. The course also features many opportunities to develop practical skills. You will be assessed on twelve mandatory practicals over the two years and in addition to your A level grade a practical skills certificate will be issued. Each year there are opportunities to gain work placements and experience days with associated universities and students may also have the opportunity to listen to famous scientists at Warwick University at the extremely popular Biology in Action Lectures.
- 6 in Biology (or 6 6 in Combined Science) - 6 in Mathematics - Achieving 6 grade 4s (or equivalent) including English Language. - Please note, if you studied Foundation Maths or Sciences at GCSE you will not be able to apply to study A Level Maths or A Level Sciences respectively as GCSE Foundation grades are capped at grade 5.
