Biology is essentially the science of life; it is what keeps us alive and everything else on our planet. Biology at A-Level is a two- year course, which will give you a sound foundation to the major aspects of biological theory, techniques and practice - from molecules and organelles, to organisms and ecosystems. WHAT WILL I STUDY? • Fundamental Biology - Including biomolecules, cells, the immune system, exchange and transport and genetic diversity. • Biological interactions - Including Energy transfers within and between organisms, Homeostasis, genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems and the control of gene expression. • There will be a strong emphasis on maths, literacy and practical skills throughout the course. You will have the opportunity of planning your own practical investigation, carrying it out and completing your own analysis.
Five or more GCSE grades 9-5, including a minimum grade 5 in English and a minimum grade 6 in Maths and Science.
This course is 100% exam based. You will be assessed at the end of the two years in 3 paper of 2 hours each: • Paper 1 will cover first-year content • Paper 2 cover second year content • Paper 3, which is synoptic, will cover both first and second year content. This also includes a 25-mark essay. The endorsed practical component involves completing 12 required practical tasks over the 2 years.
