Course Content The A-level specification builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills gained at GCSE. It constitutes an integrated study with a focus on language, culture and society. It fosters a range of valuable transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity. Turkish A level enables students to develop their linguistic skills alongside their understanding of the culture and society of the countries where Turkish is spoken. Students study technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. They will study highlights of Turkish- speaking artistic culture, including music and cinema, and learn about political engagement and who wields political power in the Turkish-speaking world. Students also explore the influence of the past on present-day Turkish-speaking communities. Throughout their studies, they will learn the language in the context of Turkish-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. Students will study texts and film and have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of their choice. Topics studied: changing nature of the family, cyber society, role of volunteering, cultural heritage, Turkish music, cinema, positive aspects of a diverse society, life for the marginalised, how criminals are treated, teenagers, the right to vote and political engagement, strikes and demonstrations, politics and immigration.
Students are expected to have gained at least five good pass grades at GCSE, one of which should be Grade 6+ in Turkish GCSE although native Turkish speakers who lack this qualification may be enrolled on the course after consultation with the Head of Languages.
The A level course has 3 units of assessment. Unit 1: Translation into English, reading comprehension and writing (40%) Unit 2: Translation into Turkish and written response to works (30%) Unit 3: Listening, reading and writing in Turkish (30%)
