This interesting and lively course encourages students to investigate the way the two disciplines of language and literature work together. You will read a wide range of contemporary literary and non-literary works of both poetry and prose. Through exploring literary and linguistic approaches you will have the opportunity to craft your own text. You will be asked to engage creatively and independently with texts and undertake a coursework project of your choice exploring how language works. Past topics have included fear and anxiety in Stephen King’s ‘It’, rejection in ‘Girl on a Train’ and the voice of the detective in Agatha Christie novels. We encourage individual selections.
For 3 A Level subjects you require 6 GCSEs grades 9-4 in academic subjects, taken in one sitting. In addition, there are subject specific entry criteria which relate to the specific demands of the subject. To study English Language and Literature at A Level prospective students will need to achieve a grade 5 in English Language GCSE. Any student who achieves a grade 4 may opt to take an internally assessed English test and if successful be admitted to the course.
