English Literature is a dynamic and exciting course which encourages you to develop your enjoyment of texts through reading widely across classic and contemporary poetry and prose. Students learn how to talk and write about literature analytically and structure their ideas critically. In the second year this leads to students choosing two texts to compare in a long essay. In the past topic choices have included the supernatural, love and science. We encourage individual selections.
For 3 A Level subjects you require 6 GCSEs grades 9-4 in academic subjects, taken in one sitting. In addition, there are subject specific entry criteria which relate to the specific demands of the subject. To study English Literature at A Level prospective students will need to achieve a grade 5 in English Language GCSE. Any student who achieves a grade 4 may opt to take an internally assessed English test and if successful be admitted to the course.
