Students opting for Further Math learn Math in Year 12 and Further Math in Year 13. The course covers a wide range of Math, building on skills from GCSE. Pure Math develops the use of algebra, graphs, functions and trigonometry. Many new concepts are also explored including calculus, complex numbers and differential equations. We also study modules in the applications of Maths to Statistics, Mechanics and Discrete Maths. The course aims to give students experience and confidence in a range of high level Maths. It is a double option (worth 2 A Levels) – so you must select it in both option blocks on your application. Students study Math with just about every combination of subjects possible. Although the Sciences are perhaps those with the most obvious connections, Math also complements Economics, Computing and the Social Sciences such as Geography and Psychology. You may also choose Math alongside more creative arts subjects. What types of skills do employers look for? Problem solving, analysis, data handling and communication skills, to name just a few. These transferable skills are useful in any job, and you can get all of them from studying Math. Further Math shows that you have a high level of knowledge about the subject and it is well regarded as preparation for degree courses in Science, Engineering and Economics. Some of the top universities expect (or prefer) you to have taken Further Math to apply for places on Math degrees or those with a high Math content. Students with Math degrees are highly respected, and Math graduates go into careers in just about everything from accountancy to insurance, computing to telecoms and business support to law.
