Course summary

The course chosen at HAM has a focus on the rights and freedoms of people, especially in the 20th Century in Year 12. In Year 13, this will be broadened to the idea of Empire and Revolution. The content is embedded with the skills of judgement, analysis and research which will enable students to engage with content and skills needed at higher levels of education such as university. The following units are covered in the A Level: • Paper 1 – In search of the American Dream (30%) This units looks at the idea of the ‘American Dream’ and whether this has been met for all people in the country. This includes how politics has changed over time as well as how civil rights have progressed for different groups of people. IT will look at the changing quality of life America and how the presidency of Reagan affected the country. • Paper 2 – India: The road to independence (20%) This unit covers the journey of the Indian people and their search for independence from the Raj (British Empire). It takes into account the religious differences, difference in culture and the work of individuals such as Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah and how the idea of India as part of the Empire changed. • Paper 3 – British: losing and gaining an empire (30%) This unit will go into the process of Britain gaining an empire and how that was set up with a focus on the navy and trade. Different colonies such as Australia will be looked at in depth in terms of how they contributed to the empire. • Paper 4 – Coursework – Russian Revolution (20%) The coursework will look at the causes of the October 1917 Russian Revolution. Students will be asked to read a number of historians and evaluate their views on the matter as well as coming up with their own opinion on the main cause. These causes will be everything from the inadequacy of the Tsar and Provisional Government to the charisma of Lenin and the Bolsheviks.

Entry requirements

A minimum of seven grade 5s in full course GCSE subjects with a grade 6 at GCSE for History. This is an extended writing subject.

How you'll be assessed

The A Level History course is made up of four units. Three of these units are externally assessed exams and one of them in an internal piece of coursework marked by staff and moderated by Edexcel.
