You must have a passionate interest in sport and enjoy watching and participating in a wide range of sports and activities. This will provide you with many practical examples to help you to understand the theory sections which students can find difficult. You must be organised, willing to learn and work hard across both practical and theory areas. Please be aware that there is very little practical content as there is such a wide range of theory work to cover. Due to this you are expected to participate in your chosen practical activities out of school at club, county or regional level.
To undertake this course students will need a grade 6 or above in PE GCSE. A grade 6 in at least one Science and a grade 5 in English. You must regularly play sport or coach for a high level junior club or above. For this one sport we would expect that you would have received top band marks at GCSE (21/25 AQA, 30/35 for Edexcel).
Students will cover theory lessons for three different sections of the specification that is assessed across three papers. Paper 1 covers the units of: applied anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology and biomechanics. Paper 2 covers the units of: skill acquisition and sports psychology. Paper 3 covers the units of sport in society and contemporary issues in physical activity and sport. Students will also be assessed in one activity in the role of performer or coach. Plus complete a written/verbal analysis of performance. An external moderator will visit Coombe to complete our final practical assessment.
