Classical Civilisation requires students to immerse themselves in the world of Greek and Roman culture. Students will explore a range of aspects including literature, art and architecture, history, mythology and society. Students will need to be keen and confident readers in order to analyse the set texts. Successful candidates will also be able to reach their own judgments, undertake independent study and demonstrate critical thought. We also arrange several visits that will broaden your knowledge and interest in the classical world including: The British Museum, university study days, visits to professional theatre productions and UCL’s annual Greek Play. The department also runs a bi-annual visit to Greece and offers the opportunity to attend Classics Society talks from leading experts through our partnership with King’s College School, Wimbledon.
Numerical grade 6 in English Language and English Literature and a 6 in a Humanities subject if taken. Classical Civilisation does not require knowledge of or include the study of Latin or Ancient Greek. Potential students are encouraged to consider that this is an essay-based subject which requires wide reading and research.
100% linear exam in the summer term of Year 13. Each exam paper is a mixture of short, sourced based and essay questions.
