Course summary

An A Level in Textile Design leads naturally to careers in Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Fashion, Advertising and Product Design. Art & Design courses are also useful if you are considering a career in such fields as Architecture, Marketing, Publicity, Animation, Arts Administration and the Media. Textiles Design is particularly advantageous for those wishing to progress onto a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. Textiles involves the creation and transformation of materials to explore and produce personal, practical and contextual investigations within the specialism. It brings together aspects of fashion, furnishing, illustration and fine art and is the perfect course for students with creative flair and an enthusiasm for drawing. You will enjoy the creative challenge of exploring and working with a wide range of natural and manufactured materials including wool, plastics, cloth and paper, developing outcomes within printed, dyed and constructed textiles. Drawing is an essential skill for studying this subject and is integral to Textile Design practice. You will explore a wide range of techniques, for example hand embroidery, machine skills, fabric manipulation and shibori.

Entry requirements

English and Math's minimum Grade 5 Best 8 including English and Math's, minimum of 48 points, average 6 GCSEs in an art-based subject at a grade 9-6. If you have not studied an art-based subject at school, but wish to be considered for the course, you will need to demonstrate your ability and interest in art and bring a portfolio to your interview.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment is by coursework and controlled assignments. You will be required to produce a portfolio of coursework and a separate controlled assignment. A final grade is determined by the externally moderated assessment of the Portfolio units and the examination. As part of the personal investigation component of the A Level, you will be required to produce a minimum 1000 word critical study. At the end of the course your work will be displayed at the annual art exhibition, which celebrates the creativity of our learners.
