Geology
Course summary
Geology is the science and study of the Earth, its composition, structure, physical properties, history and the processes that shape it. Subjects studied include earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, minerals, igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, palaeontology (fossils), economic geology (oil, gas, coal, metal ores, mining, geotechnical engineering) and Earth history. You will study and handle a wide range of geological specimens and have the opportunity to attend field trips in the UK and abroad. The aims of this course are to develop knowledge and understanding of different areas of geology and how they relate to each other; to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods as applied in geology through a practical endorsement, and to develop competence in observing, collecting and analyzing geological field data, and also in investigative, mathematical and problem-solving skills which can be applied to geological studies. You can expect to: •Develop and understand geological terms and concepts •Study and handle a wide range of geological specimens •Have the opportunity to attend field trips both within Britain (Arran and Herne Bay) and elsewhere (Iceland) •Develop the observational and recording skills required by geologists Geology is often studied alongside A Levels in other sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as Mathematics and Geography. We have strong links with Geology departments at the University of Leicester, University of Portsmouth and University of Leeds and we have good relationships with professional geologists working in the oil, mining, volcanology, seismology and engineering industries.
