Over the two years, students will study Philosophy, Ethics and the history of Christian Theology. Students will be studying philosophical and ethical questions which will help them to critically analyse the religion. Students will study Christian thought primarily but this does not mean that other religions will not be discussed. Religious Studies is a thought provoking subject and the contemporary themes will help to inspire engaging classroom discussion. The course is 100% examination with the students sitting 3 examinations; one in the Philosophy of Religion, one in Ethics and one in Developments in Christian Thought.
Students require a minimum of 7 GCSEs at grade 5 or above or equivalent, including a grade 6 in English (Literature or Language) and a 5 in Mathematics, with at least a grade 6 in Religious Studies. A minimum of seven grade 5s in full course GCSE subjects. Must obtain at least a grade 6 at GCSE in a relevant subject for the subjects being considered for A Level. Must have achieved grade 5 in English and Mathematics GCSE. A Level Mathematics requires a grade 7 at GCSE.
Method of Assessment: Examination – 100% Unit 1: Philosophy of Religion 33.3% In depth study of Philosophical issues and questions;. The following topics will be studied throughout AS and A2. A2 Topics: -Nature of God -Religious language -20th Century viewpoints Unit 2: Ethics 33.3% In depth study of how ethical theory has underpinned Christian teachings. The following topics will be studied throughout AS and A2. A2 Topics: -Meta-ethical theories -Conscience -Sexual ethics Unit 3: Study of Religion- Development of Christian Thought 33.3% A2 Topics: -Religious pluralism and theology -Religious pluralism and society -Gender and society -Gender and theology -Challenge of secularism -Liberation theology and Marx
