A Level Music combines live performance with composition, music theory and the analytical appraisal of classical and other music, helping you to develop as a performer, composer and someone interested in the history and theory of music. Studies in composition will enable you to develop a portfolio of pieces and a score displaying your knowledge of melody, harmony, instrumentation and structure. Live performances over the five terms will culminate in a final solo concert.
- Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language - Grade 5 or above in GCSE Music or grade 5 in an instrument - Three further GCSEs at grade 4 or above You will also need to pass a pre-course audition and theory test, which may lead to a bridging course before you start the A Level. If you wish to study 4 A Levels, you will need 7 GCSEs at grade 7 or above, including two at grade 8.
All aspects of the course are externally examined, split between a 10-minute solo performance, composition of two pieces (one to a brief set by the exam board) and a 2-hour written examination at the end of the course. You will also be entered for ABRSM Grade 5-8 theory and receive instrumental or vocal lessons.
