The course is designed for students with a passion for History and the hunger for intellectual challenge! It enables students to develop a geographical and chronologically broad understanding of modern for History. The A level is excellent preparation for studying modern History at degree level. There may also be opportunities to travel abroad as part of this course. High expectation on completion of tasks including essays. A minimum of 5 hours homework a week comprised of writing and reading.
Students require a minimum of a grade 5 in 7 different subjects at GCSE (or equivalent), including grade 6s in English (Literature or Language) and Mathematics, with at least a grade 6 in a related subject. A minimum of seven grade 5s in full course GCSE subjects. Must obtain at least a grade 6 at GCSE in a relevant subject for the subjects being considered for A Level. Must have achieved grade 5 in English and Mathematics GCSE. A Level Mathematics requires a grade 7 at GCSE.
Method of Assessment: Examination – 80%, Coursework 20% Units Studied: Paper 1: Breadth with interpretations In search of the American Dream: the USA, 1917 – 96 30% of A Level (2 hours 15 minutes - Three essay based questions) Paper 2: Depth Study South Africa, 1948 – 94: from apartheid state to ‘rainbow nation’ 20% of A Level (1 hour 30 minutes written paper; one source-based question; one depth essay) Paper 3: Themes in breadth with aspects in depth Britain losing and gaining an empire 1763 – 1914 30% of A level (2 hours 15 minutes written paper; one essay question and one source-based question) Coursework: Historical Enquiry Historical Enquiry - Chosen by student 20% of A Level Coursework – (one extended essay of approximately 3000 - 4000 words)
