Course summary
Why Study Film? Do you love films? Do you want to spend all your lessons talking about films, watching films and writing about films? Do you want to learn how to make your own films, or maybe you do already and want to learn how to take it to the next level? You came to the right place - we do all of that right here! The Film A Level specification is designed to deepen your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film; it is the major art form of the twentieth century and one developing new modes of expression and exhibition in the first decades of the twenty-first century. The specification builds on the cineliteracy that we have been developing since childhood. You will engage with a wide range of different kinds of films, developing skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection, as well as developing your creativity and practical film-making skills. What Topics Will I Study? Both the art and the business of Film. You will have the opportunity to study a diverse range of film forms, film styles and film industries developed in different places throughout the history of cinema. Over the 2 year A level you will study British film, US film, European and global film; film forms like documentary and short forms; film movements like silent films and experimental films. There are some set films, some optional films and you are encouraged to develop your own independent appreciation of films – this means that you can make decisions about areas of study. An Example/Illustration of the Type of Work Involved: Students will engage in both academic essays and also creative tasks. For example, students may be asked to research and analyze the construction of a film from a set genre, then plan and produce their own short sequence before filming and editing in small teams. What Careers or Higher Education Follow from this Subject? Film Studies provides a good foundation to embark on a range of Film courses at university and a stepping stone for careers in the film industry as well as associated media such as journalism, marketing, advertising or public relations. There are many readily transferable skills learned that will empower students in careers in which research, analysis, communication and expression are valued.

Assessment
Assessment is split 70:30 between written examination: practical coursework; there are 3 components in total: 1. Varieties of film and filmmaking: written exam 2. Global filmmaking perspectives: written exam 3. Production: short film or screenplay with storyboard
