The brand new A-Level History course comprises three units of study, which are: Unit 1: Breadth Study: The British Empire, 1857-1967 Unit 2: Depth Study: The Cold War, 1945-1991 Unit 3: Historical Investigation (Coursework) Unit 1 offers a fascinating opportunity to learn about a key period in Britain’s history because the British Empire has shaped the cultural diversity we find in British society today. We study the empire from a variety of perspectives making it a relevant and holistic topic that evaluates the causes and consequences of the British Empire for both the former colonies and Britain. Unit 2 takes an in-depth look at how ideological differences impacted upon every continent in the world after the Second World War. Many historians are beginning to argue that the Cold War has recently re-started and by studying this topic you will understand modern day relations between Russia and the West, as well as proxy conflicts such as the Syrian Civil War. Unit 3 is a 4500 research project on a topic of your choice - examples include the Ottoman Empire, the Rise of Sparta and the Florentine Renaissance. Skills/Aptitudes required being successful in this course: Students will be required to be fully committed, which needs to be demonstrated through regular attendance, extensive reading, completion of homework, etc. The ability to read, comprehend and critically examine information is essential. Students will be expected to work independently, as well as in groups in order to analyze and evaluate historical developments and historical sources. An interest in discussion and debating is desirable. Complementary subjects: History complements a wide variety of subjects ranging from social sciences to the natural sciences, creative arts, and languages. These include Government & Politics, Psychology, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Art, Language and Law. Pathways – Careers: Students who study History can consider pursuing courses that lead to the following professions in particular: •Law •Journalism •Social Work •Education •Government/ Civil Service •Business/Finance
To gain entry to Advanced Level Courses students must have achieved a minimum of grade 4 in both English and Math's plus 3 additional passes at GCSE (or equivalents) at grade 4 or above, in addition to both the criteria outlined below.
