Who is this course for? Studying Art and Design at A Level will equip you with a set of transferable skills both for life and for a wide range of vocational areas. This course is perfect if you want to study art, architecture and design-related subjects and allows you to explore a range of disciplines before deciding which area you want to study at degree level. What is the course about? This specification provides learners with opportunities to develop a broad foundation of critical, practical and theoretical skills and offers learners a holistic understanding of a range of practices and contexts in the visual arts, crafts and design fields, culminating in greater specialism and achievement at A Level. The specification encourages creativity, sustained investigation and analysis, experimentation, and design and making as a means of developing technical and expressive skills. It gives learners the opportunity to follow a programme of study which extends experience and personal response as well as developing imagination and critical and reflective thinking. The ability to innovate, adapt and work independently, which underlies all aspects of the specification, is valued by higher education and employers alike. What can the course lead to? This specification provides a suitable foundation for the study of Art and Design, or a related area, at higher education, a vocational qualification and employment. This industry has countless nooks and crannies that you can specialise in, ranging from popular routes such as architecture, fashion design and photography to animation, set design and web design.

Entry requirements

GCSE Level 6+ in Fine Art or 3-Dimensional Design and GCSE Level 5+ in English. All students must achieve at least 5 level 5 grades at GCSE.

How you'll be assessed

Component |: Personal Investigation 120 marks 60% of A Level Two integrated constituent parts: 1. Amajor in-depth critical, practical and theoretical investigative project/portfolio and outcome/s based on themes and subject matter that have personal significance. 2. An extended written element of 1000 words minimum, which may contain images and texts and must clearly relate to a practical and theoretical work using an appropriate working vocabulary and specialist terminology Component 2: Externally Set Assignment Component |: Personal Investigation 80 marks 40% of A Level Part 1: Preparatory study period - Stimuli is selected by student and used as a starting point from which to elicit a personal response. - Responses should take the form of critical, practical and theoretical preparatory/supporting studies which inform the resolution of ideas in 15 hour sustained focus study. Part 2: 15 hour period of sustained focus work - The resolution of learners’ ideas from the preparatory work must be completed during the designated 15 hours and they must show how their planning relates to te outcomes
