Course summary

The Level 3 course will cover a variety of professional skills. You will practice drawing from observation, learn to use professional mark-making and shading techniques, study the use of colours in design, and learn digital skills with creative software and applications. Students will also explore printing & painting techniques, fabric printing techniques, pattern making the construction of 3D forms using traditional and unusual materials, including fashion fabrics. As part of the course, teachers will help you prepare a successful portfolio for your interview, and help you to manage your UCAS application process, so that you can enter a wide range of relevant degree courses. You will learn the skills that universities really value and put you in a position to compete for the best degree places successfully. Who is the course for? The Level 3 course is for students who are considering a career in Art & Design and want to explore different art disciplines in more depth before making up their mind, this course is for you. It can lead to careers in Illustration & Graphic Design, Textile Print & Fashion, Comic Art & Animation, Fine Art & Applied Art. Study methods Most of your lessons will be art studio based where you will be doing practical tasks and completing evidence of your developing skills and knowledge in your sketchbooks. You will develop ideas for 2D, 3D and time-based live projects, learning through practical and critical activities to express yourself. You will also study the history and contemporary practice of art and design with work experience opportunities, exciting exhibition visits, trips to museums and opportunities to explore other sources of inspiration.

Entry requirements

4 x GCSEs grade 9-4 (grade A- C) including an art/design subject, or a Level 2 qualification in an art-related subject at merit/distinction grade, together with (ideally) GCSE English and maths at grade 9-4 (grade A- C). Your GCSE Art coursework, or work from your Level 2 course, will be looked at during the interview.

How you'll be assessed

You will complete sketchbooks and final pieces for each project, writing comments about your work and a final evaluation. At the end of each year, you will complete a Final Major Project (FMP) where you have an opportunity to work more independently, following a theme using media and techniques that best represent your skills and interests. This final unit will be assessed at Pass, Merit or Distinction grade, and provide the overall grade for each year of the course.
