Course summary

The biology course encourages students to develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of biology and how they relate to each other. Students will develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills and understanding of scientific methods and understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society. ~ Extra-Curricular Opportunities: Students will undertake 12 required practical experiments, this will help them build on their lab skills ready for University. In the summer term of Year 13, pupils make a day trip for one of their required practical experiments where they will be looking at the distribution of a given species in a habitat. Students will also carry out a range of dissections throughout the course such as rat, heart and fish dissections. There is a chance for students to visit university lectures to build on their current biology knowledg Additional Support: We rigorously track pupil progress using the Biology practical tracker system and personalised learning checklists. Pupils receive regular exam practice throughout the year as well as additional projects such as journal reviews to enable them to access university level learning. We support flipped learning for students which means they will need to come prepared for each lesson and we will build further and deeper knowledge with the use of lesson time. Pupils also receive regular folder checks to make sure their classwork is completed in detail and remains well organised for exam revision. Progression Routes: Biology students will be able to apply their knowledge to critical situations within Science; analyse and communicate ideas and arguments effectively; and develop excellent literacy and essay writing skills. A Level Biology allows students to gain access to university degree courses to enter certain careers such as; researchers, teachers, police officers and other public servants, doctors, nurses, medical laboratory assistants and pharmaceutical sales. Entry requirements

Five or more GCSE Grades 9-5 including English and Maths and GCSE Biology Grade 7 or GCSE Combined Science Grade 7/7.
