The law has an impact on daily life and everyone will find this course interesting whether you are planning on setting up your own business or making law into your career. You’ll gain understanding of how laws are made and how they are passed in parliament, police powers, criminal and civil courts and the European courts. Not only will you be looking at a wide range of high-profile real-life cases. You’ll also find out about the offences themselves, how they came to court, how the Judge can sentence a convicted criminal and how the solicitors, barristers, magistrates and juries interact. You will also develop analytical and problem-solving skills. In the second year you will also study tort law, looking at vicarious liability and defences. In addition to tort law, you will study either human rights or look in depth at the nature of law in a wider context, developing your understanding of how the law interacts with morality, justice, society and technology. Many of our students go on to study Law at university, allowing them to access careers in the legal system, teaching profession, police force and prison sector, amongst others. However, the study of Law at A level also develops a strong critical thinking skills that provide excellent preparation for a wide range of further study and career options.
