Course summary

Engaging, contemporary and relevant. These are just a few words that are being used to describe the new specification for Geography. You will explore and evaluate contemporary issues relating to both human and physical geography concepts, and topics that will enable you to be critical, reflective and independent learners. Studying geography will allow you to engage critically with real world issues and places, to apply your own geographical knowledge, understanding and skill to make sense of the world around you. Fieldwork is a compulsory part of the course, and during both Year 12 and 13 you will be required to attend a residential fieldtrip to collect your data and further develop and perfect your understanding and geographical skills. Physical geography topics: Tectonics, Coasts, The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity and The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security. Human geography topics: Globalisation, Regeneration, Superpowers and Migration.

Entry requirements

• 5 pass grades at GCSE • 5+ in English GCSE and a 5+ in a Humanities subject (Geography, History or RS). • The A level course content builds on the understanding developed in Geography GCSE, so whilst this is not required, it is highly desirable.

How you'll be assessed

• Paper 1: Physical systems & sustainability • Paper 2: Human systems and geopolitics. You will also be required to complete an individual geographical investigation that is worth 20% of the overall grade.
