Course summary

Film Studies will get you looking at the whole construction of film, discovering how meaning is produced with a focus on cinematography, sound, editing, and performance. Inspiring a range of responses from the emotional to the reflective. You will be analysing film and the process of film making, giving a critical response and exploring the role of film within our culture. You will study and investigate the way film works as an audio-visual form of creative expression, highlighting how meanings and responses are constructed as well as investigate the personal, social, cultural and ethical significance of film. The analytical and critical skills developed support onward progression to a wide range of higher education courses, particularly those in Arts and Humanities. Many students do go on to study degrees in film and television production, film studies or media studies. However, students also progress to a range of other courses including journalism, philosophy, American studies, law, business and marketing.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above in academic subjects, including GCSE maths & GCSE English Language.

How you'll be assessed

This two-year course is principally assessed by written examination at the end of two years of study, but also includes Non-Exam Assessed (Coursework) Components, including practical film production.
