Course Outline: Level 3 single (Extended Certificate): equivalent to 1 A Level. Single Course – Extended Certificate Unit 1 – Children’s Development Exam – 1 hour 45minutes. Unit 2 – Development of Children’s Communication, Literacy, and Numeracy Skills, Exam – 3 hours. Unit 3 – Play & Learning, Coursework. Unit 5 – Keeping Children Safe, Coursework. Skills: An interest in child development and how to support children’s development. An interest in gaining a broad understanding and knowledge of the early years and to develop essential skills, such as observation, assessment skills and reflective practice skills prized by employers and higher education institutions. Future progressions from this course: Learners who successfully complete the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) will be able to practise as early years educators. Both courses also provide opportunities for learners to progress to either academic or more specialised vocational pathways.

Work is assessed on a pass, merit, distinction, distinction* grading. The BTEC Extended Certificate will be delivered over two years; students must complete 4 units for this; 2 exams and 2 pieces of coursework.
