Course summary

At the Ursuline Academy Ilford we believe that strong literacy skills are the foundation for all learning and open doors for students in the wider world. English forms the basis for our development, relationships and our understanding of the world around us, and thus the study of English is key to personal growth. The ability to communicate effectively, confidently and with clarity is crucial in school, but also in becoming an effective participant in our wider society, with skills of communication being key to accessing the world of work and for navigating adult life. We recognize the importance of English as a means of developing the whole child, to allow them to be enriched and inspired culturally, emotionally and spiritually. The study of English helps to shape a pupil's sense of identity and moral standing, whilst affording them the opportunity to be exposed to other opinions and ways of thinking. It requires pupils to reflect upon challenging questions and concepts related to the human experience and the notion of what it means to be a good human being. As a result, we aim to support all of our students to become lifelong enthusiasts of both reading and writing with the literacy skills necessary to thrive in today's world, with our curriculum designed to help develop our students as influential persons of the future who are confident, thoughtful and inquisitive. We believe that students deserve a broad and ambitious English curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, which both ignites curiosity and prepares pupils for future learning and employment. Studying English at Ursuline Academy Ilford allows students to be exposed to an array of texts that will challenge, inspire and excite, while giving them the tools and knowledge to appreciate the beauty of language through the exploration of the writer's craft. Through the development of effective written and spoken communication we encourage our pupils to develop their own opinions and responses to texts, as well as to question the concepts and ideas presented within them.
