Chemistry
Course summary
Some of the ideas explored at GCSE will be developed and taken further together with new concepts such as organic and medicinal synthesis; spectroscopic/forensic analysis and the physical interaction of particles. A level Chemistry builds on knowledge gained at GCSE and answers the questions why and how reactions happen as well as exploring industrial applications and the behavior of a broad range of known elements. Chemistry studies reactions and substances from a biological and physical context as well as a pure Chemistry perspective. Data handling and Math's skills are a focus, alongside logical thinking, scientific writing and the application of processes and knowledge to unfamiliar contexts. The topics covered in year 12: Development of practical skills; foundations in chemistry; periodic table and energy; core organic chemistry. The topics covered in year 13 include everything in year 12 as well as: physical chemistry and transition elements; organic chemistry and analysis.
