Course summary

In addition to helping you understand many fascinating aspects of life processes and living things, this course places considerable emphasis on practical experimentation and the interpretation of data. It covers the main human body systems and compares them to a range of other organisms, frequently considering things from an evolutionary perspective. It also explores applied topics such as genetic engineering and the use of stem cells. Biology is a highly valued academic subject which can lead to a wide range of course and careers. Most student who study Biology progress on to further study at University, on a wide range of undergraduate degrees including Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Clinical/Medical Science, and Bio-technology. However, other progression routes, such as into apprenticeships and directly into employment are possible.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above in academic subjects, with grade 6/B in GCSE English Language & GCSE maths, and grade 66/BB in either Dual Award Science or two Science subjects including Biology.

How you'll be assessed

This two-year course is assessed by written examination at the end of two years of study, with a range of practical assessments (PAGs) also being completed through the course in order to also gain the Practical Endorsement which is essential for onward progression to Science based degrees.
