Course summary
This is an exciting vocational course that is recommended for those students who want to obtain a Level 3 qualification in Science but prefer profolio based assessment with a limited amount of exams, covering a wide variety of scientific subjects. It is therefore especially suitable for students who achieved a grade 4 at Combined Science GCSE. This is a two year course which rather than focus on one science discipline, allows the student to access Chemistry, Physics and Biology, in a way that builds knowledge and strong practical skills. The course is taught by subject specialists and is both externally examined and internally assessed. The Extended Certificate is equivalent to an A Level. A Distinction * is equivalent to an A*, a Distinction is equivalent to an A, a merit to a C and a pass is equivalent to an E.

Students must have achieved 5 GCSE’s (for vocational courses) at grades 9 – 4 including a 4+ in GCSE English and Maths and a 5.5 in Combined Science.

Assessment
Externally assessed by examination. This is taken at the end of year 1 and can be retaken at end of year 2 Internally assessed by coursework. This is set and marked by Pearson. In this unit pupils will be set a two-part task in which they will have to complete an experiment under timed condition. After this they will have to complete a written task based on their findings. Internally assessed by coursework.
