Course summary

The importance of communication cannot be understated. The power of the printed word and modern electronic communication is extraordinary. This media studies course will teach students the role and responsibilities of news gathering and reporting, the manufacturing and production of multi-media communication and the construction and analysis of newspaper, magazines, online texts, film and television programmes and radio production. The course also offers students the opportunity to produce two media products using traditional or modern medium focusing on contemporary issues. Through investigation and research students will develop the critical and analytical skills needed to produce their own media production using a range of techniques. This is a demanding course which will require wide reading as well as a keen interest in news and current affairs and willingness to participate at all levels.

Entry requirements

• 5 pass grades at GCSE • 5+ in English Literature or English Language GCSE • Students do not need to have studied Media Studies GCSE (although obviously an advantage if they have done so). No previous knowledge of the subject is required but you would benefit from having an active interest in broadcast fiction and news, newspapers, film and documentary.

How you'll be assessed

Written exam: Paper 1: 2 hours (35%); Paper 2: 2 hours (35%) Non-exam assessment: creating a media product in response to an annual theme (30%)
