Course summary

• Build on your work from the Mathematics A-Level, learning advanced new topics such as imaginary numbers and differential equations. • Apply mathematics to real-life problems through decision maths. You will learn how to maximise profits in a linear programming problem, select optimal strategies in game theory, and solve the ‘sat-nav’ problem of finding the shortest route through a network. • Develop transferable skills in logic and problem-solving. • Extend your knowledge of mechanics and statistics, building more sophisticated physical models and learning about statistical distributions in depth. • Gain a more rigorous understanding of the idea of mathematical proof, including the construction of proofs by contradiction and induction. The additional units that we study are: • Core Pure Mathematics - include proof, algebra, matrices, more advanced work on vectors together with polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and more advanced methods of differentiation and integration • Further Mechanics 1 - includes the AS topics plus impulse-momentum and elastic energy Further Mechanics 2 - includes centre of mass and further kinematics/dynamics • Decision Mathematics - An induction to mathematics in computing as well as looking at a more detailed look at real life application of mathematics.
