Course summary

YEAR 12: This course provides excellent progression from GCSE and it gives students the opportunity to follow a broad-based design course which stimulates creativity and innovation. Students will work on a series of designing and making (working with a range of different materials) activities and a detailed product investigation. They will be given the opportunity to look at various industrial practices. Throughout the course candidates study towards the terminal written papers and design coursework portfolio. YEAR 13: This course further encompasses creative, independent learning and candidates have the opportunity to work on a major design assignment of their own choice. Students will look in greater detail at industrial practices along with the development of existing products. Throughout the course candidates study towards a terminal exam paper. LEARNING AND SKILLS: * Acquiring a complete understanding of designing processes * Graphical work: sketching, layout, working drawings etc. * Practical work: including using timber, metals, plastics and model-making materials * Studying materials, their properties and uses * Studying manufacturing processes * Studying the relationship between design, society and the environment * Constructing balanced essays from assembled information. * Making clear notes and diagrams from video tapes, demonstrations and text * Visiting industrial sites and design studios. * Links with industry * Links with universities * Portfolio advice and feedback These are just some of the skills you will learn during the course.
