Why choose to study Business Studies? Studying Business Studies as an A Level allows students to enhance their understanding about a variety of different topics including: • Human resources • Marketing • Finance • Operations The variety of topics allows students to be better prepared for the challenges faced at higher education level. The course also helps students to build on their current knowledge and acquire a range of important and transferable skills. As a Business Studies A Level student you will be exposed to a range of different concepts and theories. Students will be expected to take ownership of their own progress by engaging in activities where independent learning will be required. Activities during lessons will be varied and will allow you to develop key skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication and numeracy. Throughout the two years students will have the opportunity to go on many school trips including to Stamford Bridge, the All England Club (Wimbledon) and an overseas trip to Disneyland Paris. Students will also be given the chance to attend specific external workshops, to aid exam preparation. Course content You will study four different themes over the two years: YEAR 12 YEAR 13 Theme 1 Marketing and People: • Meeting customer needs • The market • The marketing mix and strategy • Managing people • Entrepreneurs and leaders Theme 2 •Managing Business Activities • Raising finance • Financial planning • Managing finance • Resource management • External influences Theme 3 •Business Decisions and Strategy • Business objectives and strategy • Business growth • Decision-making techniques • Influences on business decisions • Assessing competitiveness • Managing change Theme 4 •Global Business • Globalisation • Global markets and business expansion • Global marketing • Global industries and companies (multinational corporations)
Students must have a minimum point score of 5.5 or above for their best 8 GCSE subjects. Please use the following when calculating average point score: BTEC subjects (Distinction star= 8, Distinction=7, Merit=5.5, Pass=4) Students must have at least a GCSE grade 5 or above in Maths and English Additional GCSE Criteria: 6 in Business Studies or 6 in English (if Business not previously studied) *We will consider each student’s application on an individual basis. Students who achieve a high 5 in English or Maths would be considered for entry into the Sixth Form.
Assessment Paper 1 – Marketing, People and Global Business This is a written exam. The paper is made up of two sections. This paper assesses Theme 1 and Theme 4. The paper lasts for 2 hours and is worth 100 marks. 35% Paper 2 – Business Activities, Decisions and Strategy This is a written exam. The paper is made up of two sections. This paper assesses Theme 2 and Theme 3. The paper lasts for 2 hours and is worth 100 marks. 35% Paper 3 – Investigating Business in a Competitive Environment This is a written exam but is different to Paper 1 and Paper 2. A pre-released context document will be issued in advance of the exam for you. The paper is made up of two sections. This paper assesses Themes 1, 2, 3 and 4. The paper lasts for 2 hours and is worth 100 marks. 30%
