Course summary

INTENT: The curriculum intent of Sociology is to encourage learners’ understanding and awareness of the social world around them, with a focus on the importance of social processes namely socialisation, culture and identity in relation to key social institutions such as the family. We aim to develop learners' ability to look at understanding social structures, namely social stratification such as wealth, class, ethnicity and power and how they can be used to explain social issues. Sociology aims to develop your ability to think sociologically in relation to their experience of the social world around them so that they are able to play a positive, active and informed role in society. Sociology will support them to explore, debate and critically review social issues to enable them to challenge ‘taken for granted’ assumptions and question everyday understanding in a contemporary world. Sociology intends to support their ability to construct well-argued, well-informed, balanced and structured written arguments which reflect and respond to the importance of the issues which we cover. The experience will leave them with a more tolerant and empathetic understanding of contemporary society. IMPACT: The impact of Sociology is to ensure pupils have a greater awareness of the social world around them and how factors such as class, gender, ethnicity, age, disability, sexuality can impact people in society. We would also expect that pupils have developed key skills such as communication (written and verbal), interpersonal skills, a cross-cultural understanding to be aware of stereotypes and lastly key analytical skills to allow for critical thinking and problem solving. We would expect our students to be more reflective of British values by developing the learner's social, moral, spiritual and cultural development and have a better understanding of humankind.

In order to study subjects at Advanced Level (A-Level) you need to have achieved at least 5 Level 9 - 4 including Maths and English and have met the specific entry requirements of the subjects you wish to study. In addition to the above criteria all students must achieve a minimum GCSE average points score of 4.0.
