Course summary

This A Level course focuses on the understanding and application of Chemistry concepts. The course builds on prior knowledge from GCSE Science, Additional Science and Triple Science Chemistry. There is a high level of mathematical content in the course and students are required to complete a challenging and wide-ranging set of practical activities. A Level Chemistry gives students an excellent grounding for higher education by developing practical skills applicable to a variety of industrial contexts, as well as problem solving and critical thinking skills. Studying Chemistry can lead to employment in a range of professions, including forensic science, environmental science and pharmacy. It is essential for anyone wishing to study medicine. The course is divided in to Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry. Physical Chemistry covers topics including atomic structure, bonding, energetics, rates of reaction and electrochemistry. Organic Chemistry covers key classes of organic compounds and their reactions, including alkanes, alkenes, halogenoalkanes and aromatic compounds. Inorganic Chemistry includes the study of the alkaline earth metals, the halogens and the transition metals. If you enjoy solving problems with logic, have a high mathematical ability, and have the skill and inclination to explain how substances all around you are made and interact, then you will enjoy Chemistry!

3 A level papers at the end of the 2 year course: Paper 1 – 120 minute exam worth 35% Paper 2 – 120 minute exam worth 35% Paper 3 – 120 minute exam worth 30%
