WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? Why not? If you’ve always been a creative thinker or a curious soul this is the subject for you. This subject connects the head, heart and hand – in order to think, design and make professional products COURSE DESCRIPTION This creative and thought-provoking qualification will give you the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence to succeed in a number of careers. Especially those in the creative industries. You will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put their learning into practice by producing prototypes of their choice. You will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers. There are two assessments points (both taking place in Year 13), NEA (None Exam Assessment) and Exam papers (two exam papers). Both are worth 50% of your final grade and you will need to demonstrate subject knowledge of technical principles and designing and making principles

Entry requirements

Grade 6 or above in GCSE Design & Technology, Grade 7 or above GCSE Art

How you'll be assessed

At Key Stage 5, students study the new AQA A-level Design and Technology: Product Design Specification. We teach the enhanced new course that is modern and relevant, so students can learn about contemporary technologies, materials and processes, as well as established practices. The new qualifications place greater emphasis on understanding and applying iterative design processes. Students will use their creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We encourage our students to apply for design related degree courses at university. We will support you through out the UCAS application process (personal statement), portfolio creation and interview skills. Number of lessons per week: 5 Year 12 - Mock NEA - None exam assessment. Context challenge project set by MV. -Technical principles: Theory lessons with weekly topic test -School set exam at the end of the year (one paper). Year 13 - NEA - None exam assessment. Context challenge project set by students. -Designing and making principles: Theory lessons with weekly topic test -National A-Level exam at the end of the year (two papers).
