Course summary

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR? Students who have enjoyed English Literature, Drama, Classical Civilisation, History, Ancient History, Greek or Latin at GCSE and would like to develop further their understanding of the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome. WHAT CAN IT LEAD TO? Classical Civilisation is a broad based subject which is an excellent route into any Humanities or Language subjects. A pass at AS Level enables progression to A2. It can lead directly to degrees in Classics, Classical Civilisation, Ancient History, Latin, Ancient Greek, Archaeology and anthropology or Classical Art and Architecture. It is also a well-respected course which universities will consider for entry to courses in History, Politics, Drama, English and Modern Languages and Literature. WHAT WILL STUDENTS STUDY? Students will use their understanding of history, drama, art and literature to open and broaden their understanding of the lives and culture of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Students will explore sources such as classical literature, historical texts and archaeological remains to learn what this evidence tells us about the classical world. We will also analyse what the legacy of the classical world means for us today. HOW WILL STUDENTS BE TAUGHT? Teaching will take the form of whole class teaching, group work and discussion. There will be input from subjects such as drama and the visual arts where appropriate. There will be regular homework set. This might involve research/preparation or consolidating learning by answering questions or completing a practice exam paper. Entry requirements

Minimum of 6 GCSEs at Grades 9-5 (or C and above) including both Mathematics and English Language. Students are not required to have studied Classical Civilisation in advance, but if they studied it as a GCSE subject, they must have achieved Grade C or above.
