Course summary

You are about to undertake a new subject, one that you have not studied before. So, what is Psychology? Psychology has been defined as “the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour in a given context”. Hopefully you chosen to study Psychology because you have a desire to understand why as humans we behave the way we do. Psychology is a science; you need to think like scientists. A scientific way of thinking will enhance your understanding of many areas of life. You should be able to read and understand, analyse and evaluate, describe and explain, and make informed choices. You should be prepared to ask for help as and when you need and to put effort into understanding the material that is presented. You are undertaking a course of academic study. There are many key studies to read about and understand, 50 or so key terms and a whole lot of new vocabulary. You are expected to use your initiative, especially when it comes to completing homework, classroom tasks, or research activities. As this is a new subject for you, you are not expected to have prior knowledge, but you are expected to read in order to further your knowledge. You will be loaned a text book that you can keep until the end of the year. You should read about news, popular culture and world events, and try to apply what you are learning. As you are now young adults discussing adult themes, the expectation is that you will think before you speak (you should speak, you need to join in) considering the feelings, cultural and religious values of those around you. We follow the AQA (7182) A Level Psychology Specification, some sections of the specification are included in the booklet but you can download a full copy form the AQA website. www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/psychology/as-and-a-level/psychology-7181-7182 You can find me in the Geography office (W41) or you can contact me by school email mnouelaty@southgate.enfield.sch.uk.
