Course summary

We believe in fostering students’ interests and passions. Our aim is to encourage their creativity by offering them a qualification that goes far beyond the constraints of a curriculum and allows them to complete an independent research project. We recognise that for many of our students there is a disconnect between what is expected from academics at University and what they have learnt from their sixth form courses. Therefore, we offer the Extended Project Qualification to bridge this gap. Our aim is get students started on their academic career. We understand that we must model how to carry out an independent research project. Therefore, we prioritise the teaching of time management, the acquisition of research, referencing and critical thinking. Skills we know that our students find a challenge at the start of Year 12. In essence, we believe in allowing students to reflect on skills needed in academia to best prepare them for University.

Assessment

Our priority is to deliver 30 + hours of taught skills. Taught skills are the skills needed for our students to succeed in completing an independent research project and in their further education. We prioritise skills that we know students struggle with - time management, the acquisition of research, referencing and critical thinking are continually revisited. Taught Skills are taught by a range of specialists including internal and external experts. All students will visit a library, museum and a university as part of this course. The independent research project will consist of a 5,000 word written report or artefact, a reflection journal and presentation.
