Who is the course for? Students who enjoyed Ancient Greek at G.C.S.E. level and who wish to develop further their understanding of the Latin language and the literature of the ancient Greeks. What can it lead to? A qualification in Ancient Greek still commands a great deal of respect amongst the academic community; it is a rare qualification and almost exclusively taught at independent schools. It can lead directly to degrees in classics and law, but also to many other university courses relating to language, literature and history. Doctors’ Hippocratic oath was originally in Greek, so is even relevant for a career in medicine! What will I Study? You will build upon your knowledge of the Ancient Greek language at G.C.S.E. to enable you to develop a more confident and analytical approach to the translation of Greek into English. You will read, discuss and write about a few Ancient Greek authors to enhance your skills of communication, hone your analytical skills and further develop your skills of literary criticism. WHAT UNITS WILL STUDENTS TAKE? AS Athenian Democracy (50%) The Odyssey (50%) A2 Augustus (50%) The Aeneid (50%) COURSE OFFER CONDITIONS Harrow 6th Form Collegiate expects to run courses that are offered. However, courses that do not recruit to a satisfactory level may be offered at another center or withdrawn.
Minimum of 6 GCSEs at Grades 9-5 (or C and above) including both Mathematics and English Language. Specific requirements: grade 5 or above in GCSE Ancient Greek.
At the end of the two years, students will sit four written exams: two exams will assess their understanding of the language and two will assess their understanding of and appreciation for four ancient texts.
