Course summary

WHY CHOOSE FURTHER MATHS? If you are likely to achieve a high grade 7 or grade 8 in your GCSE Maths and you enjoy Maths you should seriously consider studying A-Level Further Mathematics. The course attracts very able mathematicians who thoroughly enjoy the subject and are keen to extend their understanding of Maths. Many students taking this course go off to university to study Maths or a Mathematics related degree and have found the work covered on the course of great benefit

Entry requirements

For Further Mathematics you need to have achieved grade 7 or above in GCSE Mathematics. You will need a real passion for mathematics together with a strong intuitive grasp of mathematical concepts. To study A-level Further Mathematics you must achieve at least a Grade 8 in GCSE Mathematics

How you'll be assessed

HOW IS THE COURSE EXAMINED? Students follow a linear structure, in which students will take three papers at the end of their studies at the end of year 13. (Two core papers and an applied paper combining Statistics and Mechanics). Paper 1: Further Pure Mathematics 1 1 hour 30 minutes written examination (75 marks) 50% Proof Complex numbers Matrices Further algebra and functions Further calculus Further vectors Paper 2: Further Mathematics options 1hour 30 minutes written examination (75 marks) 50% Students take one of the following options: 2B: Further Statistics – Linear regression, Statistical distributions (discrete), Statistical distributions (continuous), Correlation, Hypothesis testing, Chi squared tests 2C: Further Mechanics – Momentum and impulse, Collisions, Centres of mass, Work and energy, Elastic strings and springs 2D: Decision Mathematics 1 – Algorithms, graphs and networks, Algorithms on graphs, Route inspection, Travelling salesman problem, Linear programming, Simplex Algorithm and critical path analysis.
