Course summary

Students who study Art or Photography will gain a wide range of practical transferable skills that will prepare them for any further venture. Students develop a better understanding of the world around them and explore their own creativity through investigations that stretch and challenge their perceptions. Art and Photography are growing subjects that relate to almost any modern career path. Unit 1: Visual Recording and Communication In this unit, you will develop your visual recording and communication skills through exploration and experimentation with materials and methods, gaining confidence in your ability to create work and express and communicate ideas. You will extend your skills through exploring the work of others, ongoing personal reflection and the refinement of your own work. You will demonstrate your practice by applying these skills to a set task. Assessed under supervised conditions. Learners will be provided with a theme and a task in the January before Assessment period is a maximum of three hours Assessment period can be arranged over a number of sessions. 60 marks Unit 2: Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design In this unit, you will develop contextual research and critical analysis skills. You will investigate the contextual influences on practitioners that drive and underpin their work. You will learn how to critically analyse pieces of art and design work, deconstructing images and thinking critically about what you see. You will develop these skills through investigation by selecting and sourcing relevant information in order to gain a full understanding of the work of artists and designers. Assessed under supervised conditions. Assessment is set and marked by Pearson. Part A is released four weeks before Part B for learners to carry out research. Learners are given three hours of monitored sessions Part B is a supervised assessment in a single three and a half hour session timetabled by Pearson. 60 marks

Entry requirements

5 or more GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications at Grade 4 or above incl. Maths and English Pass - Distinction (4+) in Art and Design or a portfolio of evidence if the Art hasn't been undertaken
