Course summary
A Level pathways are designed to prepare you for higher education and beyond, be it a degree, research or a wide range of careers. In year one you will study the AS specification and take exams in May/June. If successful, you will progress to year two and complete the full A-level. Studying religious studies enables you to have a thorough understanding of diverse philosophical and ethical viewpoints. You will understand, interpret and evaluate critically religious concepts, texts and other sources. In the AS year, you will study philosophy of religion, ethics and you will study one religion in depth. You will have two exams at the end of the academic year. In the A Level year you will study the above as well as the study of religion and dialogues. You will have two, three hour exams at the end of the academic year. You will be required to engage in debate in a way that recognises the right of others to hold a different view. You will study the influence of social, religious and historical factors on developments in the study of religions and beliefs. You will also gain critical and evaluative skills sought by higher education and employers. Throughout the year you will be assessed via essays, reports, presentations and mock exams. You must obtain at least a grade D at AS to progress to the second year of the A Level qualification. Work experience is a compulsory part of your A Level study programme. All students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours work experience in both year one and year two. This will help develop the personal qualities and skills required by universities and employers.
