Media is an important factor in all of our lives. In this age of multi-platform, 24/7 exposure, media analysis is an essential tool for young people. Media Studies requires a keen interest, a critical eye, analytical skill and creativity. Media Studies can lead to a variety of Higher Education courses, including Media, Communications and Journalism. It is also a desirable entry qualification for careers in advertising, journalism, education, and a range of professions that value creativity , design and analytical skills. Much of the work in class will be done in seminar style discussion groups. You will develop your knowledge of the media, learning to analyse texts and discover the meaning and codes behind them. You will also learn technical skills of photography, photo manipulation, broadcast and e-media using our range of Macs, cameras, lighting and sound equipment. Lesson material is also available online on the dedicated department website. Learners study a range of media forms in terms of a theoretical framework which consists of media language, representation, media industries and audiences. (See section 2 for more detail.) The following forms are studied in depth through applying all areas of the framework: newspapers, magazines, television, online, social and participatory media. Advertising and marketing, film, music video, radio and video games are studied in relation to selected areas of the framework
6 GCSE 9-5 grades to include Maths at Grade 4+ & English Language at Grade 5+. A GCSE Grade 5+ is required in at least 1 Humanity subject.
AS Component 1: Investigating the Media Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes 35% of qualification Component 2: Investigating Media Forms and Products Written examination: 2 hours 35% of qualification Component 3: Media Production Non-exam assessment 30% of qualification A2 Component 1: Media Products, Industries and Audiences Written examination: 2 hours 15 minutes 35% of qualification Component 2: Media Forms and Products in Depth Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes 35% of qualification Component 3: Cross-Media Production Non exam assessment 30% of qualification General stationery will be required. Any practical equipment required will be available from school, although students are welcome to use their own. The state of the art Mac suite has the entire Adobe Suite for students to use.
