In the History Department we seek to teach our students to be open to learning, curious about the past and the people in it, to look at evidence critically and understand why there are different interpretations of events and the impact of people and events. From the very beginning of their history journey we want them to understand that there is more than one interpretation about the past and we want to ensure that they have the skills, in both oracy and written work, to be able to articulate their understanding and to provide evidence for the basis of their judgements. In the History department we aim to provide students with a diverse History curriculum that reflects modern historiographical thinking and encourages students to develop a love of learning History that promotes a deeper understanding of the society that they live in. We have carefully designed a curriculum that we hope will inspire students to ask questions of the world and allow them to develop the skills needed to be successful within it. We strongly believe in encouraging students to explore history beyond the classroom and curriculum. We provide numerous opportunities for students to take part in educational visits and take full advantage of being on the outskirts of London with the many museums and exhibitions available to us. Students also have the opportunity to take part in visits abroad, allowing them to engage with events of historical significance in a manner that cannot be replicated in the classroom. Visits to WWI Battlefields, Krakow, Berlin and Naples have all been organized and students have gained valuable experiences from them. Studying History allows students to develop an understanding of all facets of the human experience. Allowing them to immerse themselves in a wide range of societies and cultures, and empowering them to become curious, questioning individuals who are confident in their opinions and able to express them effectively.
