English Literature consists of three externally examined papers and one non-examination assessment component. The qualification requires the study of eight literary texts plus unseen poetry. In the ‘Drama’ unit, you will study one Shakespeare play and one other drama from either tragedy or comedy, as well as a collection of critical essays. This is a lively and engaging unit that will deepen your appreciation of Shakespeare as a master craftsman of the English Language and encourage you to draw comparisons between experience in the past and today’s modern world. In our ‘Prose’ unit, you can study both 19th and 20th/21st century texts written by authors from a range of cultures and ethnicities. You will be encouraged to ‘see yourself’ represented in the texts studied. In the final ‘Poetry’ unit, you will study poetic form, meaning and language, a selection of post-2000 specified poetry and a specified range of poetry from either a literary period (either pre- or post-1900) or a named poet from within a literary period. The course also includes a coursework unit that offers the opportunity to explore and analyse texts of your own choosing.
Entry to Sixth Form is determined by GCSE average point score. This is calculated by taking the total number of GCSE subjects taken, adding them together and then dividing by the total number of subjects. Specific subject entry requirements: GCSE Maths – Grade 5 GCSE English Literature – Grade 6 GCSE English Language – Grade 6
